Panthers smack Cy Creek; boosting record to 2 – 0

Panthers smack Cy Creek; boosting record to 2 – 0 Saturday afternoon at 3:30 on September 4th the Panthers unload the bus at Klein Memorial Stadium. It’s 95 degrees in the shade and feels like 110 on the turf. Today’s match – up (schedule to start at 6) against the Cy Creek Cougars has been a long time coming for Oak. After last years last - second - come - from- behind upset the 2010 Panthers are out for revenge. This year will prove to be different. Team Captains meet at mid – field, the national anthem is played and special teams hit the turf. Q1 – KO kicks to CC and the Panther defense lines up to start the game. Straight out of the gate the D – fence runs hot. Senior Al Baratti and John Lewis sack the quarterback on the first play of the game to start things off right. Then a host of Panthers pop the Cougars for a loss of 3 yards followed by an incomplete pass. 3 and out for Cy Creek. After a short punt and no return by KO; its first and 10 from the 49 yard line for the Panthers. Play 1 from scrimmage for OAK is a QB keeper off the right side. Up front blocking by Arthur Fatu, Skyler Denny and Justin Moreno is perfect plus downfield blocking gets the job done. Team execution by the offense is perfect and Nicky Baratti runs 49 yards for a touchdown over the right side. The extra point by Shroble is good; KO leads 7 – 0 with 10:41 left in Q1. The second possession by CC is a bit different. Two forth down conversions lead to a field goal from the 28 yard line with 5:55 remaining in the 1st quarter. The Panther D, lead by the linemen (Nathan Hughes, Lewis and Jay Andrews), force two forth and short plays. CC converted both then kicked a field goal after the drive was shut down by Oak. Panthers lead 7 – 3. With a 1st and 10 from the 24; KO marches down the field behind big running by EJ Fatu plus some pass and catch between Baratti, Max Stevenson and Cory Waites. The drive stalls and Oak punts. Panther D – fence comes up big again. Junior Dashone Smith gets in on the action causing havoc in the CC backfield. A HUGE stop by Hughes on the left side and CC punts. Q2 – Oak punts to start the second quarter. AJ Hilliard and Lemon Ford sack the QB forcing a punt by Creek and OK gets the ball back. The O. Line (Jeremy Jones, Eric Sanchez, Moreno, Fatu and Denny) gets with it and Baratti runs for over 18 yards on 2 plays; another Klein Oak first down. Stevenson snags a quick slant over the middle for a gain of 10 yards and it appears OAK is headed for pay dirt again.…. Shroble punts one inside the 15. The Panther defense is still running HOT. Lewis and Hilliard score BIG hits and CC punts after 3 short plays. Defenses control the rest of the first half. Oak manages some first downs but is unable to put more points on the board. Pressure by the Panther defense is relentless; CC is 3 and out …. Q3 – Panthers kick to start the second half. Coaches call for a fake kick deep and pull up with an onside kick perfectly placed by Shroble; gutsy call and perfect execution. KO starts with the ball first and 10 from the 48 yard line. Oak offense is frustrated. Punting and trapping the Cougars inside the 5 yard line; Shroble’s is killing it!!! Hughes and Hilliard come up with big sticks on defense …. ALL ‘D’ ALL the TIME!!! CC punts. Short shanked punt is mis – handled by Oak and CC gets the ball back on the 39. ALL ‘D’ ALL the TIME!!! Keaton Studdert, Jared Williams, Smith, Hilliard, Lewis and Dillon May pressure and crack the Cougars they punt; 3 and out. With the score still 7 – 3 the defenses dominate. All ‘D’ ALL the TIME!!! Junior Cody Spiegelhauer makes a super solo tackle in the flat more pressure by Lewis, Studdert and Hughes. CC punts. After a short punt the Panther offense finally gets rolling. EJ Fatu and Baratti run middle, middle right and right. Another Panther first down. On second and 4 from the 43 Jones, Moreno and Sanchez block down, Fatu and Denny pull left leading a Baratti counter sweep, Tory Waites and Eugene Estes seal the edges and Nicky scoots and scampers into the endzone. Oak leads 14 – 3 with 2:18 left in Q3. Q4 – The final stanza: CC scores on their next drive to make the score 14 – 10 with 9:14 left in the 4th. Oak offense hits the field again. It’s a first and 10 from the 24. A couple first downs later EJ follows a trap block by Sanchez and a pulling 600….. (ie. Fatu and Denny). EJ carriers 6 defenders for 25 yards then gently hands the ball to Estes who runs another 25 yards for a touchdown. Not sure what to call this play. Don’t think it was ever drawn up on the chalk board. OAK scores leading 21 – 10 with 8:43 left in Q4. ALL ‘D’ ALL the TIME!!! CC punts 3 and out. Panther ‘O’ struggles on the next couple drives but the ‘D’ is running HOT. ALL ‘D’ ALL the TIME!!! Travis Arthur and Spiefelhauer make super fine plays in the secondary as CC starts to air – it – out. Pressure by the D Line continues!!! KO takes over on downs on a short field. The offense goes back to what it knows. Sanchez traps, 600 pulls and EJ runs untouched for 22 yards scoring another TD. Panthers lead 28 – 10 with 1:25 left in the game. Panthers bury Cy Creek in 2010. The Defense showed real character today. Hilliard led the team with 14 tackles plus a sack; Smith recorded 13 tackles plus a sack; Lewis hit for 12 tackles plus a sack; Jared Williams also scored a sack. Even though the offence punted 7 times it recorded 357 yards rushing on 35 carries; more than 10 yards per carry. The special teams game was right on track with punts inside the 20 and a great onside kick. All 3 parts make the game one for the record books. The returning players get last years revenge and KO is 2 – 0 starting the 2010 campaign. Next Friday Oak Nation travels to North Shore for a first ever match – up against the Mustangs. OAK’ em …..
