Klein Oak Football 2010 season is off to the races – Panther’s early offense paces the victory At the newly remodeled Klein Memorial Stadium; Panther offense scores early and often in the first half behind a strong running attack to defeat A & M Consolidated in the opening game of the 2010 season. Klein Memorial renovations include best in the city score board and BIG screen TV, new press boxes, new seats and expanded seating on the visitor side plus new and renovated locker rooms for all our players. A great new theater for Panther’s hunting prey. Team captains Nathan Hughes (DE), Max Stevenson (TE), John Lewis (DE), Skyler Denny (RT), Arthur Fatu (RG/NG), Travis Arthur (S), Justin Moreno (C) and Tory Waites (WR) meet at mid field for the coin toss; Oak elects to receive. Q1 – after the opening kick off goes out of bounds Panthers take over 1st and 10 on the 30. A fourteen play drive results in a 16 yard touchdown run by QB Nicky Baratti with 08:05 on the clock. The first drive of the year mixed in completions to Stevenson, WR Nick Bradley and T. Waites from Baratti plus excellent runs by FB/LB EJ Fatu and Baratti. The Offense Linemen; Jeremy Jones, Eric Sanchez, Moreno, Fatu, Denny smashed holes and protected while and wide outs Eugene Estes and Conner McQueen seal the edges to ensure success. Oak leads 7 – 0 after a Michael Shroble (K) extra point. The first defensive efforts results in a loose ball on the ground and a fumble recovery by NG Jared Williams. Panthers take over 1st and 10 from the A & M 30. The defensive crew is Hughes, Lewis, Arthur, Williams, LB Alfred Baratti, LB AJ Hilliard, LB Lemon Ford, LB Will Hoffmanns, CB Cory Waites, CB Deion Hill, S Dashone Smith. Shroble locks in on a 40 yard field goal 4 plays later the Oak leads 10 – 0 with 05:11 left in Q1. Shroble kicks it deep no return of any kind can be made. A & M moves down field and scores with 02:23 left in the first making it 10 – 7. Getting the ball back; KO receives the kick off and returns it to the 19. The offensive line takes over dominating the A & M front 5; EJ smashes through the middle with back to back to back runs for great yardage and valuable first downs. Baratti scrambles for 19. Then T. Waites rambles in from the 30 for another Panther TD. Oak goes up 17 – 7 after a Shroble extra point. Q2 – the next A & M possession is stuffed up by the defensive front line plus excellent play by the secondary causing 2 incomplete passes. A short punt by followed by a super 20 yard return by T. Waites and KO has the ball 1st – 10 on the 41. A couple plays later the ball is fumbled then recovered by A & M stalling the Panther drive. KO defense comes up big again forcing a punt after 4 downs. On the return T. Waites shakes and bakes to the 45 yard line of A & M, a beautiful 35 yard punt return. Pitch right to EJ goes for 10 and a Panther first down. Baratti immediately goes to the air and hits Stevenson with a perfect pass over the top. Stevenson makes a great catch and speeds in the end zone for a 31 yard touchdown. Perfect execution by the entire offense, extra point by Shroble and Oak leads 24 – 7 with 05:33 left in the half. The next two possessions by both teams result in punts. With 00:11 remaining in the 2nd quarter A & M kicks a field goal making the score 24 – 10 at half time. Panthers go into the locker room with a 2 touchdown lead after controlling the first half of play. Q3 – Halftime adjustments are made. Teams are back on the field. A & M scores on the first series of the 2nd half. KO punts after a short 3 play series. A & M returns the punt 82 yards for the second TD of the 3rd quarter. So with 05:53 left in the 3rd the game is tied at 24. A short return by Oak on the kick off and its 1st – 10 for the home team on the 12 yard line. The offense puts a drive together moving the ball across mid-field to the 42 before its stalled. Oak is forced to punt taking us into the final stanza. Q4 – to start the forth quarter A & M scores again. Panthers fall behind for the first time in the young 2010 season, now trailing 31 – 24 with 11:11 remaining in the game. KO buckles up and the offense turns on the turbo chargers. Baratti connects with T. Waites in the flat for 17, hits Stevenson on a crossing route over the middle for 15, mix in a run around the left edge by Baratti and a blast up the middle by EJ adding 15 more yards. Baratti goes back to Stevenson on a quick slat for 34 more yards after Max runs over 3 defenders. KO finally gets into the end zone, from the 3 yard line EJ motors in for a TD. Tying the score at 31 with 09:25 left in the game the Panthers are back in it. KO kicks to A & M a long return to the Oak 49 hurts. Three plays later and A & M pops a 32 yard field goal to take the lead again, 34 – 31 with 07:33 remaining. The next Panther drive proves to be key. On 1st and 10 from the 37 T. Waites goes around the right side for 33 yards. That is followed by a bruising carry by EJ for another 30 yards. From the 1, Baratti sneaks in for a TD. Panthers lead 38 – 34 with 06:58 left in the 4th. Two more possession for each team and the clock winds down. 2010 begins with a HUGE win against a very good A & M Consolidated team. The Panthers showed real staying power, character and drive with the late come back victory after getting down early in the 4th. Total offensive production for KO was 543 yards; 363 on the ground and 180 passing. Baratti, EJ and T. Waites all rushed for more than 115 yards behind a superb effort by the ‘Hawgs’ on the O. Line.
