Freshman Gold holds off Dekaney Wildcats 36-20

Freshman Klein Oak gold team was not the first to score but they held off Dekaney in the end to pull out a great 36-20 win.

Dekaney took an early lead on their first play from scrimmage by taking in a 70 yard touchdown run and a successful 2 point conversion to go up 8-0 on Oak.  Oak would respond with a good drive including 2 key passes from Jacob Harper to Robert Cothran, one coming with a score.  Harper punched in the 2 point conversion to tie it up with 5 minutes left in the 1st.  Oak defense held touch with good tackles from Scott Roberson, Niko Noble and Brendon Dice.

With just over 5 minutes left in the 2nd, the Oak defense came up with a big fumble recovery on a muffed snap.  Oak took advantage with Harper’s 2 great runs to get into the end zone, extra point good and Oak up 15-8 with 4 minutes left until the half.  Oak would come up with another big turnover as Marcus Gilbert pulls in a great interception and gives Oak great field position at the Dekaney 29.  Again, Oak is able to capitalize with another Harper and Cothran connection and Harper punching in a 1 yard touchdown run.  With a good extra point, Oak goes up on Dekaney 22-8 going into halftime.

Dekaney started off the second half trying to make a statement with a 50 yard touchdown run and with the 2 point conversion no good, Oak leads 22-14. Both defenses hold on the next possessions but then as the 3rd quarter is coming to an end Oak rallies and behind a Harper 50 yard run touchdown run and successful 2 point conversion, Oak pads their lead at 30-14.

Oak has the ball to start the fourth quarter off of a great defensive stand to end the 3rd with tackles by Sean Brown and Kendrick Spikes.  After both Oak and Dekaney offenses went 3 and out, Oak Mateo Omelanczuk makes a good 12 yard run down to the 4 yard line.  #35 finishes off the last scoring drive with a 4 yard run into the end zone.  The extra point is not good but Oak has a good lead at 36-14 with just over 3 minutes to play.  Dekaney makes one more push for points and scores on the subsequent kick off to bring them closer to 36-20 but that would not be enough as the Oak offense makes a couple of first downs to bring the game to a close.

Next up for Klein Oak Freshman Gold team is at Westfield on Thursday, 10/13 at 4:30.
