Panther’s go to North Shore for a first ever meeting at Galena Park ISD Stadium Early Friday afternoon on September 10th the Panthers load buses at Klein Oak headed to Galena Park Stadium in Pasadena to take on the North Shore Mustangs. The meeting is the first ever between the two clubs. The event proves to be a real battle royal between two Houston area heavyweights. Oak looses as North Shore scores late to make the difference. Q1 – Oak gets the ball first. And starts 1 and 10 on their own 20 after no return on the opening kick off. Junior QB Nicky Baratti drops back and hits senior TE Max Stevenson for 13 yards on the very first play from scrimmage. Panthers follow this with another completion to Stevenson plus one to senior WR Tory Waites moving the chains. Baratti scrabbles up the middle for 12 more yards before the drive stalls in Mustang territory. Senior Michael Shroble steps in to kick a monster 54 yard field goal and Oak takes an early lead 3 – 0. The Panther defense stops the Mustangs forcing a punt. On a critical 3rd and 1 senior Nathan Hughes and junior A.J. Hilliard stuff a run up the middle making it 4th and 1; 3 and out. A super finedefensive stand by the entire ‘D’ on the first series. Possession number two for the Panthers is hampered by a penalty and a tip ball interception. A couple plays after the pick North Shore scores to make it 6 – 3 with 5:46 remaining in the 1st quarter (extra point try was no good). The third series for Oak leads to a quick punt. The KO defensive steps up BIG shutting down NS with heavy QB pressure. Senior John Lewis has a tackle for loss followed by an outside blitz by senior Keaton Studdert which creates an open door for senior Dillon May to step in and pick off an errant pass. May returns the ball to the NS 43 where Oak takes over 1st and 10. Panthers come out deciding to run straight at the Mustangs. The O. Line (junior Jeremy Jones, senior Eric Sanchez, senior Justin Moreno, senior Arthur Fatu and senior Skyler Denny) clear the way for Baratti and junior E.J. Fatu picking up two quick first downs. A couple incomplete passes and Shroble kicks another field goal. This time a 33 yarder with 0.43 seconds left in the first tying the score at 6 a piece. Q2 – The Panther defense comes out again and plugs up anything NS tries. Team pursuit is the key on this series. The Mustangs punt after an incomplete pass on 3rd and 6. Pressure seems to come from everywhere as the NS QB has no time to throw. Senior Travis Arthur signals for fair catch on the return and KO has a 1st and 10 on the 40. Again the Panther offense moves the ball quickly through the middle of the field before the drive slows down in NS territory. Super tough running up the gut by Fatu and a nice scramble by Baratti create first downs. On a 4th and 1 from the Mustang 39 the ball goes over on downs. NS scores quickly and lead 13 – 6 with 8:29 left in Q2. NS kicks off 4 times before they get it right (penalties) and Panthers have great field position. Starting on the 40 Oak is quickly into Mustang territory. Waites catches a ball in traffic to pick up 11 yards and a 1st. A little bit of trick ‘r treat and Baratti catches a throwback pass from the sweeping E.J. Fatu gaining 31 more yards; and another 1st down. Soon after Oak misses a field goal from the 27 yard line; Panthers turn the ball over on downs. For the rest of the first half the Panther ‘D’ doesn’t give up another first down on 3 separate series. Hughes and Hilliard record losses (TFL / sack), Arthur gets a pass knock down on a 3rd and long plus the entire pursuit by the Panther defense is pressure packed causing 3 consecutive punts by NS. Panthers score one more time before the half on a Shroble 38 yard field goal with 2:42 to go in the half. At the break Oak trails 9 – 13. Q3 – Halftime adjustments are calculated, drawn up and implemented. Panthers kick. No return by NS. 1st and 10 from the 30 and Lewis hammers the HS QB causing a fumble and loss on the play (fumble recovered by NS). On the next play Ford gets in on the action recording a big hit forcing a 3rd and long. Unfortunately HS picks up a 1st then scores a couple plays later to make it 20 – 9 with 9:41 left in Q3. Again Oak moves the ball at will through mid field. Following Jones around the right side Baratti picks up 6, then hitting Waites in the flat for a 1st down it appears KO will match NS with a TD of its own. Arthur Fatu pulls and buries the defensive end; Denny pulls and pops the linebacker allowing Baratti to break free for 15 more yards around the left side. Then….. Shroble punts. The Panther defensive crew heads back out on the battle field to force yet another Mustang punt. Lewis, Ford and Hilliard lead the Panther pursuit. Then Baratti leads the offense to pay dirt. Adversity strikes but KO fights through it. 2 fumbles and a penalty frustrate the Panthers. A Big catch by Stevenson on a 3rd and long (perfect throw by QB Baratti); excellent line play on a sweep (over the left side) and Baratti picks up big yardage to the 1 yard line following Denny around the end. The drive is capped off by a Baratti QB sneak behind Moreno, Fatu, Denny and Fatu (EJ) over the right side. Q4 – with 11:56 remaining in the game Panthers make the score 15 – 20. Trailing by 5 at the beginning of the Q4 Oak appears to be in a great position to come up with a super fine win. NS goes to the QB keeper program. The KO ‘D’ finally stops them. The Mustangs punt. KO punts. Big return by NS leads to a quick score hurting the Panthers. NS leads 27 – 15 with 6:07 remaining. KO is down but not out! Great protection by Jones, Sanchez, Moreno, Fatu and Denny gives Baratti time to hit Stevenson on a deep seem route for 35 yards. Followed by a QB scramble for 10; an E.J. dozer run up the middle and Oak has a 1st and 10 on the NS 23. Fatu, Waites and Baratti all have critical runs leading the Panthers to the Mustang 1 yard line. Going in for a score to make it 22 – 27 a fumble is recovered by NS on the 1 yard line. NS scores late to make the final 34 – 15. A hard fought battle by both squads. And a fine effort by the Panthers left them just a play or two short of pulling off the big upset. Klein Oak had more total yards than North Shore and almost twice as many first downs. Turnovers hurt Oak. A bit of fine tuning and the Panthers will be ready for Collins in the first 13 – 5A district game coming up after an extra week of rest. OAK ‘em……..
