Texas 13 – 5A regular season comes to an end – Panthers dominate from start to finish crushing the Bearkats Revenge is sweet; after a disappointing loss to the Bearkats in 2009 the Panthers deliver multiple body blows punishing the Klein Bearkats in 2010. The KO offense starts the scoring early and the defense jumps right in to assist without delay. Forty – eight minutes of play later…. the ‘O’ rolled up almost 500 multi – purpose yards while the ‘D’ recorded 3 interceptions (and almost 100 return yards), 2 blocked punts, 2 sacks and 3 fumble recoveries one fumble returned for a 16 yard touchdown. Friday night lights .... Q1 – KO wins the coin toss and elects to receive the opening kick off. With a 1st and 10 on the 11 yard line QB Nicky Baratti leads the Panther offense onto the field to start the evening’s events. The 2nd play from scrimmage produces a 1st down on a completion to WR Tory Waites from Baratti on a 10 yard out route. Play 3 from scrimmage generates 17 more yards and another 1st down. Quick as lightning RB Lorenzo Stewart goes over the right side following a blast by linemen Skyler Denny and Arthur Fatu. And the 4th play from scrimmage in a mirror of the 3rd with a couple exceptions 1) Stewart does not really have the ball this time 2) Denny pulls left and leads 3) RB / WR EJ Fatu cracks back and blocks 4) Baratti keeps the ball and rolls around the left side for 61 yards and a TD….. Nick Bradley and Waites make critical blocks on the outside; Baratti runs almost untouched the entire way. KO Panthers lead 7 – 0 with 11:11 on the Q1 clock after kicker / punter Michael Shroble kicks the extra point. The kick return by Klein is jammed up by special teams hit - men Blake Ashford and Dashone Smith. Bearkats start 1st and 10 from the 13 yard line. DE John Lewis is wrecking havoc right away with a solo stop on 2nd down run play and heavy pressure on 3rd down incomplete pass. LB Alfred Baratti breaks up the pass in the right side flat…. 3 and out for Klein. The punt is BLOCKED by DE Nathan Hughes. STSP (special team super play) #1. 1st and 10 for Oak on the 27 yard line of the Bearkats. A penalty makes in 1st and 20…. Baratti drops back, linemen Jeremy Jones, Eric Sanchez, Justin Moreno, Fatu and Denny create time; Waites steaks down the left side (single covered) in perfect stride Baratti drops the ball into Waites (a better catch) … 37 yards and another TD. Oak leads 14 – 0 after Shroble’s extra point kick with 9:29 left in Q1. Bearkats start their second possession from the 20. LB Joe Matthews has a HUGE hit on first down. Klein decides to go to the air after a penalty on second down. Dropping back to pass then scrambling under heavy pressure by LB Keaton Studdert, Lewis and Hughes the QB rolls out left….. Lewis tracks him down with a sledge hammer blow forcing a fumble on the 16 yard line. Safety Dashone Smith slides over picks up the loose ball and rambles in for another touchdown…. TAKE AWAY #1. Shroble kicks the extra point; Panthers lead 21 – 0; 8:20 remains in Q1. On the follow series Klein picks up a couple first downs then punts. First and 10 on the 27; the Panther offense goes back to work. On another out route Waites picks up 11 and a 1st down. Baratti then hits Fatu on a middle screen picking up 12 more yards behind great blocking up front. Waites gets loose on another out route and Baratti hits him with a perfectly timed pass. 1st and 10 on the Klein 34; Baratti rolls left scrambling for 11 more yards. With the ball on the 14 yard line and a 4th down Oak goes for it (on 4th and 1). Trips left, in shot gun Baratti calls snap count….. then moving quickly under center, quick snap, quicker QB sneak behind A. Fatu and Denny; 1st down for Oak. Okay, back to Waites on a 10 yard out route; tough running after the catch by Waites and Oak leads 28 – 0 with thirty two seconds remaining in the first quarter. Q2 – Shroble is 4 for 4 on extra points in Q1. Klein has the ball 1st and 10 on the 22 however the frustration continues. Team pursuit by KO kills first down. CB Dillon May makes a solo stop in the flat on second down. Safety Travis Arthur blows up a run play in the middle forcing a fumble that is recovered by Lewis; TAKE AWAY #2 for Oak. Panthers punt after a 3 and out; Shroble drops it inside the 20. Arthur is back breaking up plays in the secondary; a crushing blow by the senior safety forces an incomplete pass. A QB draw play follows; Matthews and Lewis are all over it forcing a fumble (recovered by Klein). More havoc by Arthur and the Bearkats punt…. It’s partially blocked by Hughes STSP #2. Panther’s have the ball 1st and 10 on the 43 yard line. A couple plays and penalty later KO has a first down on the Bearkat 39. Waites is single covered again on the short side of the field (right side) with trips left, he streaks past the defender, Baratti lays a sweet pass right in his hands…. super fine catch by Waites AND you got it; TD!!!! Oak leads 35 – 0 after Shroble’s extra point. 8:29 remains in Q2. The Dozers (‘O’ Line) give Baratti tons of time to throw. The offense is spot on tonight…. Three and out for the Bearkats. Hughes records a sack. A middle screen is incomplete Studdert and LB AJ Hilliard destroy an option play around the left side; on 4th and 13th Klein punts. The next KO drive stalls. Shroble punts another one deep inside the 10 yard line trapping the Bearkats deep in there own territory. May hustles down field quickly to down the deep punt. The KO ‘D’ is on fire…. Matthews is all over the place making plays. Hilliard makes a saving tackle on a complete pass. Bearkats go for it on 4th and five a middle screen, NG Jay Andrews smashes through the middle causing pressure while Hilliard steps for an INT. TAKE AWAY #3. Not only does he get the INT but he runs it back 43 yards to the Klein 37 yard line. Time runs off the clock and the first half ends and the Panthers lead 35 – 0. Q3 – Klein gets the ball to start Q3. Oak defense is still hotter than rocks in a forest fire. Matthews, May, Smith, Hughes and Hilliard are all over the field. The ball is on the 47 yard line Klein throws a pass in the right flat that is incomplete…. It’s also a backwards pass and a live ball. LB / RB EJ Fatu chases the ball down 20 yards behind the line of scrimmage; TAKE AWAY #4. Fumble recovery by Fatu. Panther’s take over on the Bearkat 15 yard line first and 10; can you say short field? KO kicks a field goal from the 32 yard line but it sails wide left. Klein has the ball on the 30 yard line they run one play before May grabs another INT; TAKE AWAY #5. Unfortunately KO punts again. Klein punts. The Oak offense gets back on track. A trap play on the right side is smooth as silk. A. Fatu blows up inside, Denny blows up the outside, Jones pulls and mows over the middle, Moreno and Sanchez cut and block…. AND POW ….. EJ Fatu is gone; untouched for 30 yards. Beautiful!!! KO pounds away. EJ scores on a blast up the middle a few plays later. With 3:28 left in Q3 EJ scores on a 7 yard dive; KO leads 42 – ZIP. Klein scores on their next possession; with 2:23 left in Q3 Panthers lead 42 – 7. The Bearkat score is followed by an onside kick. Klein recovers and has the ball 1st and 10 on the 47. HUGE QB pressure by Studdert and Hughes on 1st down while DB Ernest Davis snags an errant pass (INT) and returns it 35 yards to the Klein 31 yard line. Andrews gets a massive block on the return. TAKE AWAY #5!!! The final stanza – QB Conner McQueen comes in to run the offense. McQueen leads the Panthers to another score to start Q4. Stewart goes over the right side from the ½ yard line following Denny, Fatu and a pulling Sanchez. Panthers are pounding the Klein Bearkats leading 49 – 7 with 11:22 remaining in the game. Klein manages to score one more time before the clock runs out. The game closes out ….. KO has dominated from start to finish. The final score is 49 – 14. Klein Oak finishes the season with sole possession of second place in district 13 – 5A. The 2010 Texas High School Football Playoffs start next week with a road game against the undefeated Woodlands Highlanders. The time is right KO is ready for the 2010 playoffs. OAK’ em…..
