Klein Oak Panthers vs Westfield Mustangs
October 30, 2009

Lights finally come on at Westfield; Oak wins 35 - 14.

The Panthers take the field at 8:15 pm to start pre-game warm up.  The game was scheduled to start at 7:30.  One problem zero power in the stadium.  A few minutes past eight the first section of lights come on….. Oak hits full stride on the second drive handing Westfield their 3rd loss of the season.

Oak’s first drive is 3 and out.  Michael Shroble punts one away.  Westflield starts 1st and 10 on a short field.  Nice tackles by Travis Arthur and Corey Abron don’t stop Westfield from scoring; six plays later the score is 7 – 0.

The Panther offense is 1st and 10 from the 20.  Andy Wilson takes the snap from Justin Moreno; hands one to Nick Baratti for 6 yards up the middle … then hits Tory Waites on a slant route for 7 yards…. a couple plays ….  and he connects with Michael Starr down the right side for a HUGE 40 yards.  Max Stevenson gets into the action with a 22 yard gain on a seam route in traffic on a super fine pass from Wilson.  Baratti scampers in for a TD from the six following a pull block by Skyler Denny.  Folks the ‘O’ line was near perfect on this drive hats off to ‘The Dozers’ up front; Kyle Bottoms, Greg Flores, Moreno, Arthur Fatu and Denny.  With 3:31 left in the 1st quarter its Oak 7 – Westfield 7 after the successful extra point kick by Shroble.

Westfield moves the ball down the field with a long pass play.  Then the KO ‘D’ gets serious.  On a 4th and 5 from the KO 27 Luke Muncie knocks down a pass attempt to give Oak the ball on downs.  The Second Quarter starts with Oak driving.  Four first downs and the drive stalls.  A field goal attempt from 35 is no good.  The Mustangs take over 1st and 10 on the 20.  The Panther ‘D’ give a little then takes it away.  With Collin Russell applying heavy QB pressure Trey Payne steps in and makes a high flying pick in traffic.

First and 10 on the 17 KO makes a BIG play down the right side.  Starr runs a short five yard curl.  Wilson drops back and throws with perfect timing.  Starr makes the grab shifts left then moves quickly to right and runs 54 yards to the Westfield 27.  The Mustang ‘D’ shuts the drive down and KO tries another 42 yard field goal (that falls short).  With the score still tied at seven the ‘D’ for KO chokes the Mustang ‘O’ forcing 3 and out.  Muncie scores a TFL, Nathan Hughes and Demetrich Gilliam cause heavy pressure on an incomplete pass and Arthur (with help from Abron) close in on a sweep then Westfield punts.

Starr continues his HOT streak.  With single coverage on the right (Starr) and trips left; Wilson rolls left and threads the needle back to the right hitting Starr on a post route. Making the snag in stride Starr wins the 56 yard mad dash to pay dirt.  Again The Dozers (‘O’ line) provide perfect protection for Wilson.  One minute eighteen second remain in the 2nd quarter and Oak has its first lead of the game 14 – 7.  In the final Mustang possession of the first half Russell blitzes jamming up the middle and the quarter runs out.

The Mustangs start the 3rd quarter with a quick touchdown making the score 14 – 14 (one minute and one second off the clock).  After a nice return by Abron, KO has 1st and 10 on their own 32.  On a couple QB keepers Wilson picks up 13.  Another super fine throw and great catch in traffic picks up 22 ….. you guessed it right, Starr.  Westfield picks off the next pass.  Mustangs with the ball again; on a delay shuffle pass (one that’s almost intercepted) Gilliam makes a big TFL.  Hughes then follows that with his 10th and 11th sacks on the year (with help from Markevy Johnson) forcing a punt.  KO’s next drive is frustrated by penalties….. Shroble punts.

Hughes makes a monster tackle on the return.  Marcus McClendon and Hughes stuff up the next play.  The entire Panther ‘D’ gets in on the fun and games; Abron, Gilliam, Johnson, Muncie, Lewis, Russell, Arthur and Jones make stops forcing another punt.  Baratti starts the next KO drive with a gain of 35 yards (bobbing and weaving back and forth across the field).  The 4th quarter starts with a KO penalty and a punishing catch by Starr over the middle picking up 19.  Thirty seconds into the 4th and Baratti scores his 2nd TD of the night on a 1 yard dive behind great blocking by The Dozers: Oak leads again 21 – 14.

The Panther ‘D’ forces a quick 3 and out.  A short Mustang punt gives KO the ball on the 47.  (Eddie Fatu takes over) With The Dozers dominating up front Fatu runs for 12, 15, 5 and 2.  Wilson hits a wide open Stevenson for a 12 yard TD and Shroble connects on the extra point.  28 – 14 Oak.

Big time special teams tackle by Dashone Smith and Johnson on the return.  Then Abron, Payne, Russell and Muncie make fine plays along with the entire Panther ‘D’ to force yet another Mustang punt.  Quick work here by the offense (another short field) is and the capped off with a 23 yard QB keeper by Wilson for a TD; one more extra point and its 35 – 14.  The Mustangs score on their final possession.

The second half is controlled by Oak throughout; final score is KO 35 and Westfield 14.    Next up is the Dekaney crew. OakNation will be ready.  OAK’ em!!!
