Klein Oak Panthers vs Klein Collins Tigers
October 15, 2009

Klein Oak Panthers lose a close game with rival Klein Collins Tigers

The Tigers scored first with a 70 yard drive capped off  by long running plays of 25 yards and 18 yards that gave them a 6-0 lead.

Oak struggled early giving up two interceptions and a fumble on their first few positions.  Collins had no such problem.  They continued to run the ball and put together a 60 yard drive including a 20 yard run and a key 3rd down conversion with a 10 yard run for a touch down.  The extra point was good and the Tigers now lead 13-0.

It did not take long for the Panthers to get back into it.  After a 10 yard kick-off return by Gabriel Limon, Quarterback Austin Schoech followed with a 10 yard pass completion to Andrew Medina.  On the very next play Schoech again hooked up with Medina who managed a one hand grab to complete the pass which brought up 2nd down and 2.  Oak caught Collins off-guard expecting a run but Schoech completed another pass to Andrew Bailey for a 25 yard gain to the Tiger 18 yard line  A 6 yard sack by Collins brought up a long 2nd and 16, but Oak kept up the passing game with two more long receptions by Bailey including a 18 yard  completion he ran into the end zone for an touchdown.  Oak missed the extra point and the game was now 13-6 Collins.

Collins returned the following kick-off to the 28 yard line, but a great tackle for a loss by Saul Chavez put the Tigers in a long 3rd and 16 at their 17 yard line. Oak stepped up the defensive pressure and forced a fumble that was recovered by J’Corey Soloman at the 17 yard line.  Unfortunately, the Oak offense was not able to take advantage of this great field position and after some poor ball handling and loss of downs were backed up to the 37 yard line and turned the ball over to Collins on downs. However, a great defensive effort by Oak’s Brad Korenek forced a bad pass that was intercepted by Saul Chavez and ran back for a touchdown.  Kwame Kuffor kicked the extra point tying the game at 13-13.

On their next possession Collins completed a 37 yard pass play that moved the ball to the Oak 25 yard line.  It was at this point that the game was delayed when Panther J’Corey Soloman went down with an ankle/leg injury that required emergency treatment by Cypress Creek EMS and a trip to the Hospital.  The game resumed with Collins threatening to score at the Oak 25 yard line.  Hover, Kurt Berkes recovered a Collins fumble that gave the ball back to Oak.  With little time left, the 1st half ended with the score tied at 13-13.

Collins received the kick-off to start the 2nd half and immediately returned the ball 80 yards for a touchdown.  Adding the extra point made the score 20-13 Collins.

Oak returned the kick-off to the 34 yard line and managed to advance the ball into Collins territory behind some aggressive running by Gabriel Limon and three pass completions by OB Austin Schoech to receiver Andrew Medina.  Unfortunately, the drive stalled and Klein Oak had to punt but managed to put Collins deep in their own territory.  However, Collins again surprised Oak with a 90 yard run from scrimmage for a touchdown and extra point that extended their lead 27-13.

Oak threatened on the next possession managing to advance the ball all the way to the Tiger 6 yard line.  However, a false start penalty moved Oak back to the 11 yard line and with 3 tries they were unable to score.  Collins took over on downs at the 11 yard line.  The Oak defense held and Collins punted.  Oak took possession at their 35 yard line.  QB Schoech then completed passes to receivers Medina and Bailey for big gains.  However, penalties put the Panthers in a long 2nd and 20 at the 50 yard line.  A 19 yard run by Gabriel Limon kept the drive alive .  An 8 yard pass to Andrew Medina gave the Panthers a 1st down at the 23 yard line.  QB Schoech again went to receiver Bailey who scored a touchdown.  The Panthers were successful with a 2 point conversion and they were back in the ball game 27-21.

It looked like with one more possession Oak could win this ballgame, but with 3:42 left on the clock Collins stayed with what had been working – running the football. They managed to convert a key 1st down that allowed them to run out the clock and end the game 27-21 Collins.
