Klein Oak Panthers vs Klein Bearkats October 1, 2009
With several key players out with injuries, the Bearkat running game proved too much for the Panthers to overcome at Klein Memorial Stadium Annex.
The Panthers took charge early with a 45 yard kickoff return to the 50 yard line. Quarterback Austin Schoech, making his first appearance leading the JV Gold offense, completed a 10 yard pass to Andrew Bailey for a 1st down at the 40 yard line. On the very next play Bailey ran the ball 39 yards to the Bearkat one yard line. Schoech followed up with a 1 yard run to give the Panthers a 6-0 lead.
After retuning the kick-off to the 40 yard line, the Bearkats came out running and converted four 1st downs behind runs of 11 yards, 8 yards, 10 yards, and 8 yards, capped by a 7 yard run at 2nd and goal which gave the Bearkats a touchdown. A successful extra point attempt gave the Bearkats a 7-6 lead.
Klein Oak was unable to convert on their next position and had to punt the ball away from their own 18 yard line. A 37 yard punt by Gabriel Limon and a 10 yard penalty by the Bearkats moved the ball all the way back to the Klein 35 yard line. However, Oak quickly gave this back with a 15 yard personal foul penalty that moved the ball forward to the 50 yard line. Again, the Bearkat offense came together behind runs of 9 yards, 5 yards, 15 yards, and 12 yards to score a touchdown. The successful extra point extended the Bearkat lead to 14-6.
The Klein Oak offense continued to struggle and had to punt the ball away after failing to advance past their 35 yard line. The Bearkats returned the ball to their own 48 yard line and capitalized on this good field position. This time the Bearkats went to the air and completed a 28 yard pass that put them on the Oak 20 yard line. Four plays later the Bearkats scored making it 21-6.
With little time left in the half, Klein Oak attempted to put some offense together, but were hampered this time by penalties of 25 yards that kept them backed-up against their own end zone. The first half ended with the scored 21-6 in favor of the Bearkats.
The second half opened with Klein once again taking to the ground; however a Panther defense that seemed intent on stopping the run and some costly Bearkat penalties resulted in the Bearkats punting the ball away. Klein Oak took over on their 18 yard line and managed to advance the ball to the 43 yard line behind a Schoech pass to Andrew Medina. However, the drive stalled and Oak had to punt.
A 20 yard punt return by Klein put them in good field position at the Oak 38 yard line. This time, a stepped up Oak Defense forced a fumble that was recovered by the Panthers at the 38 yard line. Again, penalties seemed to keep Oak backed up in their own territory and the ball was turned over on downs at the 40 yard line. A defensive stop gave the Panthers the ball back on their 34 yard line, but an interception quickly turned the ball back over to the Bearkats .
The Bearkats now on the Panther 35 yard line looked to score again, but some great defensive pressure by Broderick Lacy forced a fumble that he recovered. With time running out the Panthers went to the air but several pass attempts were unsuccessful. The Bearkats got the ball back one last time and were able to run down the clock and eventually win the game 21-6.
The Panthers are looking forward to regrouping this week at home against the Tomball Cougars.
