Klein Oak Panthers vs Cy Woods Wildcats September 10, 2009
JV Gold Opens Strong but Game Slips Through Their Fingers in the Closing Minutes
The Klein Oak Panthers and Cy-Woods Wildcats played a close and physical game at Panther Field that was only decided in the final minute. The game opened with Klein Oak’s Blake Edwards taking their first possession 80 yards for an Oak touchdown. The extra point was nailed by Kwame Kuffor giving Klein Oak a 7-0 lead. However, it would not take long for Cy-Woods to answer. Following the Klein Oak kick-off, they immediately marched down field with an impressive drive that ended with a one yard touch down run by Cy-woods. The extra point was good making it a 7-7 game.
Klein Oak could get nothing started offensively on their next possession and had to punt the ball away. Cy-Woods took over and immediately ran into a strong Panther defense capped off by a 4th and 1 sack by Georgi Zdravkofv which resulted in Cy-Woods turning the ball over on downs. The Panther offensive line (Thomas Seitz, Philip Castor, Adam List, Tanner Choppy and John Dice) then provided enough protection to advance the ball downfield including an impressive 25 yard run by Blake Ashford. However, once again the Cy-Woods defense held strong and the Panthers had to punt the ball way. The 1st quarter ended with the score tied 7-7.
In the first minutes of the 2nd quarter neither the Klein Oak Panthers nor the Cy-Woods Wildcats were able to get their offenses moving. Several penalties backed up Klein Oak into long yardage situations, but a 15 yard run by Rock Stevens and an eventual defensive sack by Zdravkofv kept the Panthers in the game. Following the sack, Klein Oak took over on downs at their own 35 yard line. However, the Panthers turned the ball over on an interception thrown by Quarterback Aaron Reyes. Although this was the only interception thrown by Klein Oak, it was costly for it set Cy-Woods up with good field position at the Panther 40 yard line. Cy-Woods took advantage of their field position with a long pass to the one yard line, and eventually scored on a one yard run. The extra point was good making it 14-7 with Cy-Woods leading at the half.
Klein Oak began the 2nd half by kicking off deep for a Cy-Woods touchback Cy-woods started at their own 20 yard line. After making a 1st down on a nice pass play, the Klein Oak defense held strong and the Wildcats had to punt again. Klein Oak took over with good field position and advanced to mid field following a 6 yard run by Quarterback Reyes and a 15 yard face mask penalty on Cy-Woods. However, the Cy-Wood defense held and Klein Oak punted. Following the punt, Antonio Salgado of Klein Oak put a hard tackle on the Cy-Wood punt return man and downed the Wildcats at their own 22 yard line. A couple of costly Panther penalties allowed Cy-Woods to advance to mid field, and it looked like Cy-Woods was again going to take advantage. However Andrew Medina came up with a huge interception that was returned to the Cy-Woods one yard line. It looked like a sure touchdown for Klein Oak with 1st and goal, but the Cy-Woods defense and some Panther penalties kept Klein Oak out of the end zone. Cy-Woods took over on downs at their 15 yard line. The end of the 3rd Quarter came with Cy-Woods still leading 14-7.
The 4th quarter began with Cy-Woods punting the ball after a three and out. The Klein Oak offense continued to struggle after failing to take advantage of good field position on the 50 yard line. Again, Klein Oak’s Gabriel Limon had to punt the ball away. Cy-Woods took over on their 37 yard line, but a fumble recovery by Klein Oak’s Antonio Salgado quickly turned the tide of the game. The Panther’s offense, led by a 20 yard run by Quarterback Reyes, advanced the ball to the Cy-Woods 17 yard line. A subsequent 10 yard penalty backed the Panther’s up to the 27 yard line, but the Panther’s were not to be denied. Reyes threw a 27 yard touch down pass to Medina. The extra point was good and the game stood tied at 14-14 with only minutes left in the game.
The Klein Oak kick-off was returned to the 30 yard line by Cy-woods. A Klein Oak sack by Luis Urea and Demetrius Burgess moved Cy-Woods back to the 12 yard line, and it looked like Klein Oak would have good field position following a Cy-Woods punt. However, the punt return was fumbled by Klein Oak and Cy-Woods ended up getting the ball back at their own 42 yard line. With little time left the Wildcats took the ball down field with some impressive running plays and scored with less than a minute left in the game. The extra point was good making it 21-14 Cy-Woods. Klein Oak had only 55 seconds to tie the game, and managed to advance the ball following the kick-off, but time expired and the game ended with a victory for Cy-Wood 21-14.
