Klein Oak Panthers vs Klein Bearkats October 1, 2009
Bearkats Over the Panthers, 8 – 29
The Black JV team had a rough night at the Klein High field losing 8 – 29. The team experienced lots of player changes this week, injuries (bad) and promotions to varsity (good). The offense timing was off and the defense struggled with the power game of KHS. The boys will persevere and the fans won’t lose hope over one bad night.
The Captains of the Week were Brandon Arnold, Xavier Doyle and Connor McQueen and immediately the fans knew things were different for this game, QB Connor had a cast on his throwing hand that was obviously going to limit his duties. Tuff McClain and Alfred Baratti took turns working the QB position while Khaleeq Little had to do double duty at running back with the well-deserved promotion of Jason Williams to Varsity. Oak received the kick-off and immediately ran into issues with timing on hand-offs and the ball found the ground and the Bearkats found the ball. KHS took advantage and scored immediately, 0 – 7. Oak got the ball back, steadied the ball handling and started a nice steady drive behind the O-line of James Fuentez, Alex Sisson,Dakota Thompson, Kyle Phillips and Daniel Shaul. Khaleeq did a lot of running with nice gains and option keepers by Tuff. The Coaches showed some confidence in the O-line with a gutsy call to go for it on fourth and two at the 40 yard line and winning the battle. Tuff threw some swing passes to DJ Scott that were good gainers and Alfred Baratti made an incredible block sprinting out of his backfield position in front of Khaleeq. Nicholas Bradley threw another great downfield block to move the ball inside the KHS twenty threatening to score. Once again the ball found the ground and the Bearkats found the ball. Brandon Vong, Drew Latham and Darius Butler made some nice stops but KHS was able to move the ball steadily down the field when the quarter ended.
The second quarter started with KHS pushing the ball into the endzone, 0 – 14. Oak was forced to punt and Dillon May did his job with the good snap and Nicholas Bradley did his job with a punt to the nine yard line. KHS and Oak traded another series of punts when Oak got a fumble recovery for a short field with just a minute left on the clock. Oak just couldn’t push the ball down the field and the half ended with the Panthers feeling pretty frustrated with the game.
The third quarter opened and the frustration only grew when Oak ran an onside kick and the ball bounced to the only Bearkat paying attention, all other blue jerseys had turned their backs to position for blocking. With the short field, KHS sped to a score, 0 – 22. Oak went three and out and another score happened shortly thereafter and KHS was up 0 – 29.
The fourth quarter had a redeeming moment when Matthew Garland recovered a KHS fumble. Khaleeq followed the block of Aaron Mitchell for a twenty yard run to put Oak on the scoreboard. Alfred Baratti ran in the two-point conversion, 8 – 22. KHS ran out the clock to end the game.
